The withdrawal of US forces from Niger officially concluded on Tuesday, according to a joint statement by the defense departments of both countries, which highlight the “safe, orderly and responsible” manner in which it has been “Effective cooperation and communication between the US and Nigerien armed forces”.

The communiqué states that the process began on 19 May “following mutual establishment of withdrawal conditions” and continued with the withdrawal of US forces and military equipment from Niamey Air Base 101 on 7 July and from Air Base 201 in Agadez (north) on 5 August.

According to the note, the coordinating body of the US Africa Command, composed of a general officer and his staff, has already left this country in the Sahel region.

The withdrawal of US troops, established in Niger since 2012, follows the denunciation by the ruling military junta of the defence agreements that bound the two countries.

The statement stresses that the process was made possible by “effective cooperation and communication between the US and Nigerien armed forces, which allowed to ensure a safe, orderly and responsible withdrawal without complications and within the agreed deadlines”.

According to the statement, “over the last decade, US troops have trained Nigerien forces and supported joint anti-terrorist missions against the Islamic State and al-Qaeda in the region”.

“The US Department of Defense and the Ministry of National Defence of Niger, says the note, recognize the sacrifices made by the forces of both countries”.
